  • Respond promptly to enquiries, arrange viewings and follow up prospective bookings
  • Promote the centre through local networks, community contacts and agreed online channels
  • Coordinate successful capital and service-delivery projects linked to the centre

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confidence approaching prospective hirers and promoting the centre
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to plan work, meet deadlines and follow tasks through

  • Confidence using email, Microsoft Office and electronic record systems
  • Ability to identify problems, take appropriate action and escalate concerns
  • Understanding of equality, accessibility and inclusive customer service

Location: Birmingham (based in Boldmere, Sutton Coldfield)

Hours: Monday – Saturday, up to 35 hours per week (some regular Saturday working required)

Salary: £25,480 per annum (based on 35 hours)

Contract: Permanent

Could you bring together people, purpose and fresh ideas to help our charity shop thrive?

Our Boldmere charity shop is an important part of the local community and generates valuable income to support the wider work of Age Connects West Midlands.

As our only charity shop, it offers a genuine opportunity for the right person to make their mark. We are looking for a Charity Shop Manager who can provide clear and supportive leadership to a committed team of approximately 22 volunteers, identify opportunities to increase income and create a welcoming shop that customers want to visit, donate to and support.

This is a hands-on role for someone with warmth, personality and drive. You will take ownership of the shop's day-to-day operation while bringing fresh ideas to its continued development.

In this role, you'll:

  • Lead and support our volunteers, providing visible, confident and consistent day-to-day leadership
  • Create a positive and inclusive team culture where volunteers feel welcomed, valued and informed
  • Set clear daily priorities, delegate tasks effectively and help volunteers make the best use of their skills
  • Induct, train and support new volunteers and maintain appropriate volunteer cover across opening hours
  • Give clear and constructive feedback and address concerns promptly, fairly and sensitively
  • Work practically alongside the volunteers while retaining clear responsibility for leading the team
  • Take an active and creative approach to generating income and work towards agreed sales, Gift Aid and fundraising targets
  • Promote Gift Aid confidently and consistently, monitor sign-ups and overall shop performance
  • Identify opportunities to increase sales, donations and customer loyalty
  • Plan regular raffles, seasonal promotions and community activities
  • Test fresh ideas to increase footfall and average customer spend
  • Build relationships with local residents, community groups and businesses
  • Create a welcoming, safe and well-organised retail environment with high standards of customer service and presentation
  • Oversee merchandising, window displays and the creative presentation of stock
  • Manage stock sorting, pricing, labelling, rotation and replenishment
  • Maintain effective stock flow, backroom storage, recycling and unsuitable or unsold stock
  • Handle customer queries, feedback and complaints appropriately
  • Manage cash handling, till procedures, banking and accurate records
  • Ensure the shop operates in line with organisational policies and relevant legal requirements

We're looking for someone with

  • The ability to motivate, organise and bring out the best in volunteers or staff
  • Clear direction and the confidence to address problems constructively
  • Warm, confident communication with a wide range of people
  • A combination of creativity and commercial awareness
  • Motivation to meet targets and generate income
  • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills
  • Organisation, reliability and a willingness to take responsibility
  • A proactive approach, bringing forward ideas rather than waiting to be told what to do
  • Comfort making everyday decisions
  • A hands-on attitude and willingness to roll up their sleeves and work alongside the team
  • A genuine interest in the local community and our charitable purpose

Knowledge of Gift Aid and charity retail would be helpful, but training can be provided for someone who brings the right leadership skills, attitude and drive.

The role is available for up to 35 hours per week, worked across Monday to Saturday. Some regular Saturday working will be required. We are happy to consider a reduced-hours arrangement for an exceptional candidate.

How to apply

Please submit your CV together with a covering letter explaining:

Why this particular role appeals to you; how your experience would help you lead and motivate a diverse volunteer team; what ideas you would bring to increase Gift Aid, shop income and community involvement; your preferred number of working hours; and your availability across Monday to Saturday.

Closing date: 18 September 2026 (although we reserve the right to close applications earlier if sufficient suitable applications are received).
